Begin with a familiar feeling
A portrait does not have to begin with a pose. Think about a place where you naturally relax, something you enjoy doing or a person you are comfortable beside. A short walk or a conversation can offer a more useful starting point than a list of expressions to perform.
Simple choices, fewer distractions
Comfortable clothes and a calm background give the eye somewhere to settle. Colours do not need to match exactly; a small shared palette is often enough. Bring something that feels like you, and leave room for the photograph to be imperfect in a recognisable way.
Give the session time to unfold
The first frame is rarely the whole story. A little time to settle in can change the way a person stands, looks and interacts. Agree on the practical details beforehand, then allow moments of rest and conversation during the session.
